an overview of assigning external causes of injury and
poisoning
This session
will provide HIM professionals with
an overview of the External Causes
of Injury and Poisoning section of
ICD-9-CM. Whether a novice or an
expert this session will have
something for everyone. How to use
the alphabetic index and tabular
lists effectively will be
discussed. Common and important
definitions will be highlighted.
Attendees will be able to
confidently assign Place of
Occurrence E-codes. Gray, confusing
and difficult causes will be
discussed and explained. Examples
will be used to demonstrate logic of
assignment and your specific E-code
questions will be answered.
Nathan McWilliams, RHIA Director of MIS & Trauma Registry Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation
Nathan is a graduate
of the Health Information Management program
at the University of Pittsburgh. He has
worked for the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems
Foundation as the Trauma Registry Analyst
for seven years and is currently the
Director of MIS and Trauma Registry. Prior
to working for the Foundation, Nathan was a
CPT-4 and ICD-9 coding consultant for
QuadraMed. He currently is pursuing a
Masters degree in Public Administration from
Penn State.
